It might’ve been a while since he last played for Arsenal, but the forgotten man Lucas Torreira is still delivering the goods on loan at Fiorentina.

The Uruguay international – who also spent last season on loan at Atlético Madrid – last appeared for the Gunners in June 2020, but he has just been named Player of the Month at Fiorentina for March.

What’s the story?

Well, the South American thoroughly deserves the award.

It comes after Torreira scored two goals in three Serie A games during March, which won four points for Fiorentina.

The 26-year-old first popped up with a goal against Bologna, which helped to secure a 1-0 win.

Then, Torreira opened the scoring against Inter Milan, only for Denzel Dumfries to equalise and snatch a 1-1 draw.

The Arsenal loanee’s effort have helped Fiorentina rise into eight place in Serie A with 50 points to their name, where they are just four points off a Europa League qualification spot.

Arsenal set to wave goodbye to Lucas Torreira

Unfortunately for Arsenal, nothing Torreira does in Florence will earn them anymore than £13m.

Fiorentina have an option to buy the Fray Bentos-born maestro for £13m, and according to Sport890, they are closing in on a permanent deal for the terrier-like midfielder.

That isn’t the best news for Arsenal, who spent £26m on Torreira in 2018.

Now, it seems the Gunners will have to accept a 50% loss on their investment, due to Torreira’s excellent displays in Italy.

That doesn’t reflect very well on the recruitment team, but hopefully, that £13m sum will be reinvested properly this summer.
