Crysencio Summerville scored a wonderful hat-trick for Leeds United’s Under-23 side on Monday night as Andrew Taylor’s side eased past Crystal Palace to win 4-0. Kalvin Phillips, and Joe Gelhardt, were impressed.
It has been an intriguing season for 20-year-old Summerville. It got off to a brilliant start, making his senior Leeds debut and clocking up eight first-team outings. But his last game came in the FA Cup, a defeat to West Ham.
The two-time Netherlands Under-21 star is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract, and was the subject of interest from Hamburg in January. Bild reported in January that he is ‘frustrated’ at Elland Road.
Since then, Leeds have changed managers. Jesse Marsch is yet to use him, but has named Summerville as a substitute in all five of his Premier League games as boss. On Monday, he reminded everyone of his huge potential.
He took his tally to seven goals for the Under-23’s this season, with three against Palace in a brilliant 4-0 win that sees Taylor’s brilliant start as second-string boss continue. Summerville posted on Instagram after.
Phillips and Gelhardt react as Summerville shines for Leeds 23’s
With Raphinha expected to leave the club in the summer as Barcelona stage talks with his agent Deco this week, there is a vacancy about to open up on the right of Marsch’s 4-2-3-1 system. Summerville is showing he can take it.
While a replacement is expected, and the fact Leeds still boast Jack Harrison and Dan James, Summerville’s form of late has been electric. Leeds could do worse than handing the Dutchman more of a senior chance.
Phillips seems to think so – commenting on Summerville’s Instagram: “Serious”. Gelhardt has also been impressed, reacting with “best ever”.
