Spanish outlet Super Deporte claim Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle have opened talks to sign Memphis Depay – just one season after he moved to the Nou Camp from Lyon. The Dutch ace has fallen down the pecking order.
Depay, 28, joined Barcelona on a free transfer under Ronald Koeman from Lyon – after scoring 76 goals and creating 55 more in 178 appearances. Leaving Lyon as captain on a free, Koeman decided to lure him to Barca.
He started well, but with stats now reading 10 goals in 30 games for Barca – he has dropped behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres. He has failed to start a league game since the beginning of December.
That is down to injury, but also because of Xavi’s January recruits. He has come on as a sub in each of Barca’s last five. SD say Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle have opened talks to sign the ex-Manchester United man.
However, a report towards the end of March from Mundo Deportivo claims Tottenham are leading any Premier League interest in the race for Depay. He is currently earning £82,000 a week at Barca, according to GOAL.
Arsenal, Everton, Newcastle or Tottenham – where best for Depay?
Arsenal desperately need a striker with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah out of contract – and that seems to be a realistic move for Depay. Everton have little chance, given their current position in the league.
Newcastle have the cash, and a former Lyon teammate in Bruno Guimaraes. But Tottenham could need cover for Harry Kane if he departs. Arsenal or Spurs would be Depay’s best move this summer.
