Alan Shearer amazed by ‘very, very clever footballer’ at Tottenham Hotspur

Alan Shearer has labelled Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane as a ‘very, very clever footballer’, as he told Premier League Productions (03/04/22 at 7:00 pm).

Over the weekend, the Newcastle legend would have watched on with dismay as Kane ripped apart his boyhood club without even getting his name on the scoresheet.

Even though Kane didn’t find the back of the net, the Tottenham 28-year-old still walked away with the Man of the Match award, as he displayed a passing masterclass.

The England captain, during the past few seasons, has completed his game by showcasing a creative side that perhaps only Kevin de Bruyne can match in the Premier League.

Those skills that Kane brings to the table were explained by Shearer, who was, once again, left amazed by the player.

“Whether you want him to work hard, which comes naturally to great players anyway,” said Shearer. “Then, you add to that his ability to put the ball into the back of the net. And he’s one of the best at doing that.

“Then, you look at his touch and technique. His ability to turn and make those passes. Those crosses that we have seen for a long time now, so he is a very, very clever footballer.

“It was a really intelligent performance from him (against Newcastle). He will be devastated that he hasn’t scored because he’s a goalscorer. That’s what he wants. That’s what his mentality is about.”

Kane is breaking individual records, left, right and centre, including creeping up into fifth spot regarding the Premier League’s all-time goalscorer.

Of course, it’s Shearer who sits right at the top of the tree, well since 1992 anyway, as Kane will feel he can, not just only overcome his 260 goals, but that of Jimmy Greaves, possibly.

The England legend scored 266 goals in Tottenham colours, but overall in English football, Greaves has 357 to his name.

That’s a remarkable record for one of England and Tottenham’s greatest, as Kane, with his goalscoring mindset, will want to hunt down everything possible.
