The Case Study of Vanitas season 2 or season 3?

The first point of call is to actually explain some confusion within the community as to whether the next broadcast of The Case Study of Vanitas will be the second or third season.

This is because the series’ first season was split between two cours (a three-month programming block) over the course of its 24-episode broadcast.

Season 1 part 1 of The Case Study of Vanitas aired from July 2021 to September 2021, with part two premiering in January 2022.

Consequently, this signifies that the next project within The Case Study of Vanitas anime adaptation will be season 2 of the television series.

The future remains bright for The Case Study of Vanitas season 2

Whilst The Case Study of Vanitas has not yet been publicly renewed for a second season, the future remains extremely bright for the fan favourite anime series.

In fact, the view that The Case Study of Vanitas is a fan favourite show is one of the main reasons why the global community is so confident that it will eventually be renewed by Studio Bones. The show is currently scoring a 7.8/10 on IMDB and 8.9/10 on RatinGraph, with scores of 7.91/10 and 8.23/10 on MyAnimeList for both respective parts of season 1.

The series also featured as one of the best anime of 2021 for both Anime News Network and IGN. Moreover, The Case Study of Vanitas earned a nomination for Best Fantasy at the 2022 Crunchyroll Awards and a total of five nominations at the 2022 Anime Trending Awards!

Then we have the fact that the original manga series by Jun Mochizuki that The Case Study of Vanitas’ anime adaptation is based on is still ongoing, releasing its ninth Tankobon volume in June 2021.

Anime renewals are often dependent on the availability of source material to an animation company, especially considering that any deviation into an anime original production is usually met with a disastrous reception from fans.

This means that with the original manga series still ongoing, there should be plenty of source material available to Studio Bones for a second anime season; further cementing our confidence in The Case Study of Vanitas’ eventual return.

The problem is that the return of The Case Study of Vanitas for season 2 could be a very long time away and it all comes back down to the manga, see below.

Prepare for a very long wait on The Case Study of Vanitas season 2

Whilst the global community is extremely confident that The Case Study of Vanitas will return with season 2, fans should be acutely aware that it could be a very long wait. This is because of the source material, or should we say the lack of source material currently available to Studio Bones that could be adapted for a second television season.

As previously noted, nine volumes of the manga have been published in Japan. The problem is that, per Anime Geek, episode 24 of the anime is set to completely adapt up until the very latest manga chapter. Therefore, Studio Bones will have to wait for more manga volumes to be released domestically before they can start work on season 2.

The bad news is that these new manga volumes are not released on a regular schedule, with only three volumes being released since October 2019.

If Jun Mochizuki continues to release new volumes on a similar schedule, there likely won’t be enough source material for season 2 until at least the end of 2024.

Considering that Studio Bones is currently working on season three of Mob Psycho 100, season six of My Hero Academia and season 4 of Bungo Stray Dogs, there was little chance that production could start immediately, even if there was enough source material available.

Overall, fans should prepare themselves for a very long wait before The Case Study of Vanitas returns for season 2; at least in 18-months, but more realistically in over two years’ time.
