Roy Keane wasn’t happy with the Republic of Ireland’s ‘way over the top’ celebrations after Tottenham’s, Troy Parrott, scored a last-gasp winner against Lithuania on Tuesday night, as he told ITV Sport (30/03/22 at 12:05 am).
With five minutes of added-on time, Tottenham’s young gun picked up the ball outside of the box in the 97th minute, after a clearance, and rifled home the winner.
There were scenes of pure jubilation, both from the players, in the stands and the members of staff on the touchline.
Even though it was a friendly match, it meant a lot to all involved, with Tottenham’s 20-year-old showcasing his talents once again.
But, it didn’t please former Republic of Ireland captain, Keane, who was critical of the celebrations and told them to ‘get over it’.
“It was an important win,” said Keane. “Better late than never, but they made hard work of it.
“I think the celebrations at the end are way over the top. But an important goal, even for Parrott, he’s a young player.
“His career has probably stalled a little bit. But they kept going. Showed a bit of spirit and fight. You take that win. The feel-good factor. Keep that going. A bit of momentum.
“Honestly. That’s way over the top. For managers, staff and players. To react that way, to a friendly win. Come on! Get over it.”
It may have been just a friendly but, at the end of the day, it seems as though fans, players or coaching staff can’t celebrate anymore without someone having a pop.
The game is about emotions, regardless of the magnitude of the event, the quality of performers on show, or whether 500 people are watching or 50,000.
Those same emotions still run through your veins, especially when it’s a late, late winner.
Plus, it’s not like the Republic of Ireland are dancing on the clouds when it comes to what they have been producing of late because it has been bang average, so last night’s celebrations shouldn’t be criticised.
