Fabrizio Romano claims that Newcastle United are interested in signing Bologna left-back Aaron Hickey. The Scottish defender is said to be valued between £15million and £20million, but other clubs are also looking at him.

Hickey, 19, joined Bologna in the summer of 2020 from Scottish Premiership side Hearts and struggled in his first season. He managed just 12 outings during the 2020-21 season, after 34 senior outings for Hearts in Scotland.

But this season, he has become first choice for Bologna. He has started 26 of Bologna’s 29 Serie A match this season, coming on as a substitute in another. It has attracted interest from the Premier League this season.

In January, CalcioMercato suggested Celtic and Manchester City were keen – while  Tuttosport – as per TeamTalk – Steven Gerrard wanted him at Aston Villa. Now, Newcastle have thrown their hat into the race for Hickey.

Romano reports that Newcastle are interested in signing the Scotsman, who finds Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson ahead of him at national level. But others are keen, and may have to spend up to £20million.

Newcastle eye Hickey: Could Hickey signing be a sign Targett may go?

Or is it simply that Newcastle want to sign Targett from Aston Villa permanently, which is expected, and then bring in top-quality competition for the ex-Southampton man? The likely scenario is the latter.

Hickey is a top talent and has proven his worth in Serie A. But is he ready to start in the Premier League? Arguably not just yet. Easing him in would work better. He can also play as a winger, he would not just be back-up.
