As you may have heard, the World Cup will be slightly different this year. The iconic tournament is due to be held in November, with Qatar hosting.

Due to the rules in Qatar, supporters won’t be allowed to do some of the things which are usually permitted at international tournaments.

With very strict rules in place, let’s take a look at what England fans can and cannot do at the World Cup in Qatar…

Can you drink alcohol at the World Cup?

Drinking alcohol is not allowed in Islam, and is not part of the culture in Qatar – those who do so are heavily frowned upon.

It is actually an offence to be drunk in public spaces, and if found guilty of doing so, you could be fined or sentenced to six months in prison.

However, supporters hoping to drink can do so at higher-end hotels or private clubs, as well as in designated FIFA fan zones.

Selected areas in stadiums will also allow the consumption of alcohol.

What can I wear at the World Cup?

Aside from drinking, there are many cultural elements to be wary of in Qatar.

For one, your choice of outfit could offend some people, as well as tattoos – at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, tattooed players were asked to cover up.

According to the BBC, there isn’t necessarily a dress code in Qatar, although supporters must be respectful to the culture.

For example, if someone is to wear shorts or beach wear around government buildings, national museums and Doha’s renowned Souq Waqif marketplace, they are likely to be asked to cover up.

Keep this information in mind, as it would be a nightmare to end up in the hands of the authorities during the World Cup.
