Trevor Sinclair believes West Ham United could beat Aston Villa to Kalvin Phillips but, speaking to talkSPORT (23 March, 12.30pm), adds that staying at Leeds United will be the Premier League star’s top priority.
It’s that time of year again.
Debating Phillips’ future at Elland Road has become something of an annual tradition these days and this year is no different. The Times claim that long-time admirers Aston Villa are currently ‘leading the chase’ for the England international’s £60 million-rated signature.
West Ham are expected to test the waters again too, having reportedly failed with a £50 million bid in January (Guardian).
But luring Phillips away from Elland Road would be easier said than done. This is not Raphinha we’re talking about.
This is a homegrown talent, an academy graduate living the dream at his boyhood club. Phillips is not going to turn his back on Leeds United unless he feels that a fresh start elsewhere would be his only means of progression.
Will Kalvin Phillips stay or go?
“He’s obviously emerged as one of the best midfielders in the Euros,” says Sinclair, the former West Ham, Man City and England winger.
“I think he’s a Yorkshire lad, he’s proud of his heritage. He’s proud of the club who have given him the platform to play. And I feel that, if he feels the club will match his ambition, there’s a good chance that he’ll stay and sign a new contract.
“If he feels the club are making good moves, good recruitment, they’re on the right trajectory, of course (Phillips could sign a new deal).
“But, if he doesn’t feel that, I think he will leave this summer.”
West Ham’s interest in the so-called ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’ certainly raises inevitable questions about the future of another homegrown hero-turned-posterboy.
If Phillips arrives, does that mean Declan Rice will be clearing out his locker?
“I feel West Ham are a slightly bigger club than Villa at the moment based on the 60,000 supporters they get and the recent performances in the league,” adds Sinclair. “I feel West Ham is a slightly bigger proposition than Aston Villa for Kalvin Phillips.
“The only problem I have is that Declan Rice may be leaving.”
