Arsenal are interested in signing PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo but Tottenham Hotspur allegedly believe they can win the race.

With 16 goals and 15 assists in 37 games this season, it’s no great shock that Gakpo is a wanted man.

Reports from The Athletic suggested earlier this week that Arsenal and Liverpool are both accelerating their interest in signing Gakpo.

There is a belief that Gakpo will be allowed to leave for around £35million this summer, with Bayern Munich and Barcelona also keen.

Gakpo is a man in demand and you can add Tottenham to the list with Spurs keen on signing the Dutchman according to The Express.

Tottenham allegedly think they can be strong contenders for Gakpo if they secure Champions League football; as things stand, Arsenal are ahead of Spurs in that race.

Tottenham also believe they have a real chance of securing Gakpo because of the other clubs in the race.

Arsenal are more focused on a striker than another winger whilst it will be hard for Gakpo to break into the Liverpool and Bayern lineups.

The report claims that Tottenham think that all plays into their hands, but there are a couple of things that go against that belief.

Firstly, Tottenham also have a star-studded attack. Just how does Gakpo – a left-sided winger who cuts in on his right foot – start games over Son Heung-min?

That doesn’t sound likely, and with Dejan Kulusevski shining on the left, Tottenham aren’t exactly built for a winger to come in right now.

Additionally, Gakpo will absolutely know about the struggles of Steven Bergwijn since his move from PSV Eindhoven to Tottenham.

Bergwijn can barely get a kick in the Tottenham side and Gakpo may well fear going a similar way should he make the exact same move.

It’s hard to see Gakpo picking Tottenham for those reasons, even if moves to Arsenal and Liverpool don’t really make sense either.
