The latest England squad has been announced, and while Gareth Southgate has always claimed that he picks his teams on form, there are a few questionable selections in this side.

The likes of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Jordan Pickford have all made it into the squad, while more worthy players have been left out.

With that in mind, we’re going to have a look at five players who should feel aggrieved after missing out on the England squad.

Eric Dier

Eric Dier used to be an England regular, and now he’s rediscovering the form that made him a Three Lions stalwart a few years ago.

Back playing at the heart of Spurs’ defence, Dier has been key to the London club’s top-four push this season, and while results haven’t always gone Tottenham’s way, he’s been a consistently solid performer.

With the likes of Tyrone Mings and Harry Maguire being called up, Dier has every right to be annoyed about missing out this time around.

Max Kilman

Another centre-back, Max Kilman has played a massive part in Wolves having the fourth-best defence in the Premier League this season.

The confident ball-playing defender would be brilliantly suited to Gareth Southgate’s back five, and his recent form was certainly worthy of an international call-up.

Perhaps Kilman will get in next time.

Jacob Ramsey

Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey has been an absolute revelation this season – especially since the turn of the year.

The midfielder has put in a number of classy performances – notably against Manchester United and Leeds in recent weeks, while he also netted a fantastic goal against West Ham over the weekend.

Ramsey has been compared to both Zinedine Zidane and Yaya Toure in recent weeks, and it’s fair to say England need a player like that.

Tyrick Mitchell

England selected just one left-back in this squad, and even then, Luke Shaw hasn’t been brilliant this season.

Tyrick Mitchell would have provided extra depth in that position, while his performances for Palace this year have certainly warranted recognition.

At the age of just 22, Mitchell has plenty of time to right this international wrong.

Dan Burn

We hate to keep banging on about centre-backs, but Dan Burn has been exceptional since joining Newcastle in January.

The Magpies have been a real force in 2022, and their defence has been almost impenetrable.

Of course, Tyrone Mings and Harry Maguire have been there and done that on the international stage, but based on recent form, Burn deserves his maiden cap.
