Yesterday, Gareth Southgate announced his England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Switzerland and the Ivory Coast.

There was a place for Tyrone Mings, although his Aston Villa teammate Jacob Ramsey was unfortunate to only make the Under-21 side.

In our view, the £15,000-a-week wonderkid should be furious, specifically for one reason.

What’s the story?

Well, Ramsey has enjoyed a stunning season so far, scoring six goals in 26 Premier League appearances, while also providing one assist.

Of course, no 20-year-old should feel entitled to a place in the England team, although Southgate is clearly in an experimental mood having given Marc Guéhi a maiden call-up.

In our view, Ramsey should be furious because Jack Grealish was selected ahead of him.

The £100m man has only recorded two goals and two assists in 19 Premier League games so far this term, which isn’t great given how much he cost.

Ramsey has scored three times as many goals, so there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be in the Three Lions squad ahead of Grealish.

Jacob Ramsey must use England snub as motivation at Aston Villa

It’s sad to see Ramsey miss out on a call-up, although he must channel whatever emotion he is currently feeling into something positive.

The Villans still have ten Premier League games left this season, and there will be other international breaks before the World Cup in November.

If Ramsey keeps playing at the level he is, then it will surely become impossible for Southgate to ignore him again.
