Jesse Marsch has told Thursday’s press conference – as per Leeds Live – that Leeds talent Archie Gray is already a player with huge intelligence. It comes after Gray scored against Manchester United for the 23’s on Tuesday.
Gray, who is still just 16, is of course the son of ex-Leeds striker Andy Gray and nephew of Elland Road legend Eddie Gray. He has been earning rave reviews in the Under-23 side this term – and has been in first-team training.
Indeed, Gray has appeared on the first-team bench in the 4-1 loss to Arsenal as well as the 3-2 win over West Ham. He has made 10 Premier League 2 appearances this term, scoring his first 23’s goal on Tuesday night.
With the Manchester United goalkeeper nowhere to be seen, wonderkid Gray blasted an effort into the back of the net from all of 35 yards. Marsch has commented on the potential of the young central midfielder.
“Archie has massive anticipation, intelligent, reads the game well, runs all day. Incredible blood line. Homegrown talent, but we have to support him and be patient with him without putting too much on his shoulders.
“Excited to be on the pitch every day. Loves training. Strong qualities as a person that will help him develop,” Marsch continued in Thursday’s press conference ahead of Friday’s trip to Molineux to take on Wolves.
Marsch on Gray: Could Leeds talent get a chance before the summer?
Probably not. Gray’s current aims will be on becoming a regular in the Under-23’s, with the likes of Jack Jenkins and Joe Snowden currently first choice. But it will not be long before he surpasses the like.
Given he only turned 16 last week, Gray is miles ahead of the curve and thanks to his bloodline – there is plenty of hype surrounding his future. His goal against United in front of nearly 10,000 fans will increase said hype.
But Gray will not be thrown in at the deep end before the end of the season, unless Marsch can secure the survival of his new side with games to spare. Next season, Gray might be handed his debut from the bench.
