Jeunes Footeux report that Lyon are working to extend the loan of Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele on loan for the 2022-23 campaign. They cannot afford the permanent £54.5million clause in his loan deal.

Ndombele, 25, was allowed to join his former club Lyon on loan in the January window – having only managed 10 starts in all competitions beforehand at Spurs. Antonio Conte found little room for the midfielder.

Indeed, it is a signing that has not gone to plan at Spurs. Signed with massive hype and initially impressing under Mauricio Pochettino, the Argentine left a couple of months after Ndombele joined.

Since then, under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte – he has struggled to shine. Back at Lyon, he is reigniting his previous form and Lyon want to keep him – and working to strike a second loan spell.

Ndombele to Lyon: Should Tottenham allow second loan spell?

There is no room for Ndombele at Tottenham. Conte likes to play with hard-working, defensive-minded midfielders – which has seen Rodrigo Bentancur shine and Harry Winks come back into the fold at the North London club.

But should Spurs allow a loan? Or should they look to find a permanent move for Ndombele in order to bring in some cash that would allow Fabio Paratici to sign better players? It depends if Spurs can find that club.

Realistically, their best chance of selling Ndombele is by reducing the permanent clause in his loan – something more achievable from Lyon’s point of view. Another loan may convince Lyon to spend big.
