Chris Sutton has told Premier Sports that Celtic should look to bring in Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist on a free transfer. The Swiss star has been linked with a move to Rangers, as recently as January.

Siegrist, 30, has been excellent for Dundee United since joining the club in the summer of 2018. But after four seasons, and 51 clean sheets in 134 appearances, it looks as though he is on the move and finding a new side.

The Mail claims Rangers are planning a pre-contract agreement for the ex-Aston Villa goalkeeper – but do face competition from Premier League club Southampton. But Siegrist is yet to pick his next club, Celtic have a chance.

Joe Hart has been superb between the sticks – but it is a major drop between Hart and the next option, in Scott Bain. Siegrist would hand Hart some strong competition. Sutton urged the Hoops to bring him to Parkhead.

“If I’m Celtic I go out and buy him at the end of the season as back up. I really like him. He’s had a number of seasons at Dundee United now. I think he is a brilliant goalkeeper,” Sutton told Premier Sports, as per Celtic Way.

Sutton on Siegrist: Do Celtic really need the Swiss goalkeeper?

Hart has been superb for Celtic and is showing no signs of slowing down. Bain is perfectly happy as back-up, and is a Scotland international. While there is a gap in quality, is it really necessary to improve it?

Rangers need Siegrist more. Van Bronckhorst is about to lose Allan McGregor, unless the 40-year-old pens another contract at Ibrox. Jon McLaughlin is not good enough to be the club’s no.1 – Siegrist might be.
