The Athletic report that Liverpool are set to raid Celtic for 16-year-old winger Ben Doak ahead of the summer window. The youngster is yet to sign professional terms at Celtic – allowing Liverpool to nab him for a small fee.
Doak is very highly-rated at Celtic and it now appears that Liverpool are ready to take advantage – bringing him to Anfield with a deal expected in the summer. Here are five facts on the potential next new face at Anfield:
1. Doak has made Celtic debut
Doak came off the bench in January to make his debut for Celtic – the latest name to get a chance under Ange Postecoglou. He featured for more than 20 minutes in a 1-0 win over Dundee United, and came on against Rangers too.
2. International form
Doak is a regular for Scotland’s Under-17 side – scoring a goal against Wales earlier this season. He has four caps for the `17’s, having also won caps at Under-16 level. He is likely to be involved for the 18’s and 19’s very soon.
3. Liverpool competition for Doak
Liverpool have competition for Doak. The Athletic report that a number of clubs have shown interest in signing the 16-year-old – who was born in 2005. However, the prospect of playing for Jurgen Klopp has tempted him.
4. Postecoglou praise
Having made his debut earlier this season for Celtic against Dundee United, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou was full of praise: “He’s a fantastic kid who comes from a good family. He looked really composed for his age.”
5. Versatility
Doak is naturally a winger but he has been seen in Celtic’s academy playing as an attacking full-back, a wing-back or even as a no.10. Little surprise, then, that Liverpool have chosen to bring the Hoops wonderkid to Anfield.
