Legendary Italian football manager Arrigo Sacchi has claimed Gianluigi Donnarumma made a mistake signing for PSG amid interest from the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham last summer.
Speaking to Corriere della Sera, the former AC Milan boss stated that the 22-year-old Italian international should have remained with his boyhood club rather than leave for financial reasons to Paris in 2021.
Donnarumma left Milan last summer as a free agent and signed for PSG, where the keeper makes a reported £213k-a-week, with the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham also chasing the superstar shot-stopper last summer.
Following PSG’s exit from the UEFA Champions League, Donnarumma has been criticised by both fans and pundits, with the keeper’s mistake allowing Karim Benzema to score his first goal of the evening in what was an iconic performance from the France international.
And according to Sacchi, Donnarumma was wrong to leave Milan for PSG and despite interest from Arsenal and Tottenham, with the keeper seemingly struggling for form in France.
Sacchi said: “He made a mistake and chose the money. I also told his father and mother last summer here in Milan. Stay at Milan not so much for gratitude, but because it was the ideal place to grow.”
Donnarumma’s PSG move looks more questionable by the week
Donnarumma’s move to PSG this summer was hardly a surprise, yet as the season had progressed, it is beginning to look like an unusual decision from the Italian international to leave Milan.
The keeper could have become a legend for the Rossoneri, and with Arsenal and Tottenham both reportedly interested in Donnarumma last summer before his move to PSG, the superstar could have made a better career decision than joining the French giants seemingly for financial reasons.
