What is the Doors vs Wheels debate?

The latest debate to take over Twitter is: Are there more doors or wheels in the world?

The poll was shared by New Zealander Ryan Nixon on March 5th 2022 and has since garnered over 220k responses and 16k likes on the original tweet.

Out of all 223,347 votes, 46.4% of people chose doors while 53.6% voted for wheels.

The original tweet has since gone viral on several social media platforms, creating a huge online buzz within a few days.

How many wheels are made in the world?

Around 77.9 million motor vehicles were produced in 2020 across the globe. If every vehicle has five wheels (including a spare tire), that figure comes to 389.5 million wheels per year.

Around 364,000 bicycles are produced every day, which comes to 132,860,000 bikes and 265,720,000 bicycle wheels each year.

It’s estimated that there are 1.5 billion cars in the world, as well as over 1 billion bikes.

Moreover, since 2006, Lego has made around 306 million rubber tyres every year for its construction kit toys. This figure increased to 381 million in 2010.

In total, more than one billion wheels are produced only for bikes, motor vehicles and Lego toys.

How many Hot Wheels are made per year?

According to several sites, 16.5 Hot Wheels are produced every second and over six billion of them have been sold since 1968.

That’s more than the number of cars that have been manufactured and sold by the Big 3 car manufacturers: General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler Stellantis.

Around two billion toy wheels are reportedly produced every year, so we have only three billions wheels from bikes, vehicles, Lego toys and Hot Wheels.

And don’t get us started on other wheels. Apart from vehicle and bike wheels, there are wheels in office chairs, tiny wheels in drawers, as well as balance wheels used in mechanical watches and small clocks.
