According to Marca, Emerson Royal now wants to leave Tottenham and return to Spain, with Atlético Madrid interested in his services.

What’s the story?

Well, the Brazilian only joined Tottenham in August, arriving from Barcelona in a deal worth £25.8m.

However, things haven’t gone well for the right-back in north London, and The Sun believe Antonio Conte is happy to sell the defender.

Marca believe Inter Milan are also interested in the 23-year-old, but he would prefer to return to Spain and sign for Atlético Madrid.

Interestingly, Diego Simeone tried to bring Emerson to the Wanda Metropolitano before he moved to the Premier League.

Marca add that Atlético Madrid have already made contact with Spurs, who have placed a €20m (£17m) price tag on Emerson.

Tottenham must learn from Emerson Royal deal

In our view, the signing of Emerson has to go down as one of the worst deals done by Tottenham for many years.

Effectively, Spurs have willingly decided to take an £8.8m loss on a player they signed just a matter of months ago, which is a rarity in football.

Fabio Paratici has to learn from this.

It is not sustainable for Tottenham to operate in this way, and in truth, they’re lucky that Atlético Madrid seem to like Emerson, as few clubs would express an interest in someone performing so poorly.

Hopefully, Tottenham can recoup £17m for the £48,000-a-week man, and reinvest that money into someone who will help Conte immediately, just like Dejan Kulusevski has.
