Tim Sherwood has said on Sky Sports News (1:17pm, March 5, 2022) that Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur should have signed Oriol Romeu from Premier League rivals Southampton in the January transfer window.

The former Tottenham manager does not think that Spurs should have brought Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus in January.

The Sky Sports pundit think that former Barcelona and Chelsea defensive midfielder Romeu would have been a good signing for Tottenham.

Sherwood said: “We had this conversation like three weeks ago after the window. They could have signed Ward-Prowse or Romeu at Southampton, better than the midfielders that Tottenham have, but not sexy enough.”

Tottenham right not to sign Oriol Romeu

In our view, Tottenham were right not to make a move for Southampton defensive midfielder Romeu.

Yes, the Spaniard is a very good player who has been a success in the Premier League, but he is 30 now.

Tottenham do not need a 30-year-old midfielder now.

Both Bentancur and Kulusevski are young players who can only grow and develop further.

Now, of course, just because Romeu is 30 does not mean that he is past his prime.

But, you have to ask that if Romeu was that good, then why he is still at Southampton.

Surely a bigger and more ambitious club would have snapped him up?
