Coventry City manager Mark Robins insists reports linking Gustavo Hamer with Celtic, Rangers and Premier League outfit Leeds United are ‘just speculation’, speaking to the Coventry Live.

This is not the first time the Brazil-born Dutchman has been mentioned as a potential transfer target for an Old Firm giant.

But last summer, the supposedly £4 million-rated Hamer laughed off reports suggesting that he was on his way to Ibrox, telling Voetbal Primeur that he ‘never spoke’ to a Gers side then managed by Steven Gerrard.

That does not necessarily mean these new reports are nothing more than tomorrow’s fish and chip paper, of course. Hamer’s blend of energy and skill certainly won’t have gone unnoticed. Especially with surprise-packages Coventry establishing themselves as dark horses for promotion this season.

Hamer also played under Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst at Feyenoord.

But, according to his current manager, Hamer is still very much a Coventry City player. And there is nothing more to say on the matter, as far as Robins is concerned.

Where next for Gustavo Hamer?

“I am not going to comment on speculation,” explains the former Barnsley boss, who has Sky Blues supporters dreaming of a return to the Premier League after two decades in the lower divisions.

“It is just speculation.

“When something happens, you will definitely know about it.”

According to Football League World, Celtic, Leeds, Brentford and Norwich City are also interested in Hamer, a ‘special player’ perhaps best remembered for that 25-yard header against Watford during his debut season in the West Midlands.

New Leeds boss Jesse Marsch may prioritise a new midfielder in the summer transfer window. MLS playmaker Djordje Mihailovic is an option.

Leeds have also made a £15 million bid for Marsch’s former Red Bull Salzburg string-puller Brenden Aaronson.
