Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has praised winger Xherdan Shaqiri on the club’s official website for his contribution to the club.

Klopp made the comments about Shaqiri while analysing the impact that Luis Diaz has made at Liverpool since his move from FC Porto in the January transfer window.

The Liverpool boss has said that the Switzerland international winger was “brilliant” for his side during his time at Anfield.

Klopp said: “Again, it was necessary, we cannot rely on these boys and we have on top of that, not to forget, Divock Origi and Taki Minamino, we had Shaqiri here, all brilliant players who helped us to win the things we won in the past.

“You need to bring in quality and fresh energy. That’s what we tried and it looks like it worked out.”

Graceful and generous

In our view, Klopp is being generous about Shaqiri’s time at Liverpool.

Yes, the winger won the Premier League title and the Champions League with Liverpool.

But can we really say that Liverpool would not have won those two trophies without him?

The former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan winger played only 63 times for Liverpool in three years before being sold to Lyon in the summer of 2021 for £9.5 million (The Athletic).

Now 30, Shaqiri failed to make an impact at Ligue 1 club Lyon in the first half of this season and moved to Major League Soccer club Chicago Fire in the January transfer window.
