Slaven Bilic has claimed that Virgil van Dijk is ‘too casual’ when playing for Liverpool because it’s too easy for him, as he told Premier League Productions (05/03/22 at 8:30 pm).
The former West Ham boss added that Van Dijk is ‘so confident’ that he, in turn, kills the confidence of his opponents.
Liverpool weren’t at their best against West Ham on Saturday, but they remained strong in defence to secure that clean sheet and valuable three points.
With Van Dijk getting stronger and stronger following his long-term injury last season, Liverpool are also powering up during these crucial final months of the campaign.
Bilic played at centre-back during his playing days and he likes what he sees from the ice-cool defender at the heart of Liverpool’s defence.
“It’s unbelievable (on VVD’s record at Anfield),” said Bilic. “Sometimes, he looks too casual. Sometimes, he looks like he isn’t on his toes. But he doesn’t have to be on his toes.
“He’s such a powerhouse. He is the soul of this team. He is everything to this team. And he’s so confident that he kills the opponent’s confidence.
“It looks like he doesn’t care, it looks like he has an extra spare gear or a couple of them. He makes everything look easy.
“He is giving the licence and is giving Trent and Robertson to go any time that they want.”
That win against West Ham over the weekend was also of significance for Van Dijk because he broke a long-standing Premier League record.
The Dutch international has now gone 60 games at Anfield without tasting defeat, as he broke Lee Sharpe’s record for Manchester United.
Added with that record, Van Dijk will want to add more trophies to his and Liverpool’s name following their League Cup win last week.
They already have the upper hand in the Champions League and should finish the job off against Inter Milan in the second leg.
Whilst they are still hunting down Manchester City and they are still in the hat for the FA Cup.
