Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has caught a bit of criticism for his post-match behaviour on Saturday.
Directly after a 1-0 defeat at Leicester City, the American, who replaced Marcelo Bielsa in West Yorkshire this week, organised a post-match huddle on the field with his players.
Andy Townsend claimed that it was ‘unnecessary’, while former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys also criticised the gesture on Twitter.
And although Owen Hargreaves is in agreement that it wasn’t needed, the former Manchester United midfielder has taken issue with something else Marsch did at the King Power Stadium.
The newly-appointed United manager applauded the travelling supporters after the game and did a Leeds salute by banging on the club crest.
Here’s how Hargreaves reacted to the footage, telling Premier League Productions: “To be honest I’m not a huge fan either. I don’t think the players are. They don’t like to huddle up especially after a loss. I like the fact that when the game finished he called all the players over to go to the away fans. But pumping the badge….I mean, you’ve only been there a few days.”
No doubt some supporters of the Elland Road outfit will be divided by Marsch’s post-match gesture regarding the badge.
There is something sacred about it and performing the Leeds salute within days of getting the job, after a defeat no less, is a tad suspect.
However, the former Red Bull Leipzig manager could also be trying to illustrate that he’s fully on board with the club and fanbase and perhaps that’s his motivation.
We could debate it for hours, but winning games will get the Leeds fans on board far quicker than perceived pandering and once he starts steering United away from the relegation zone, gestures like this will be a little less controversial.
