Paul Merson has urged Tottenham Hotspur on Sky Sports News (1:27pm, March 5, 2022) to sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton in the summer transfer window.

The former Arsenal star believes that if Ward-Prowse joins Tottenham, then Kane will not have to drop deep to play long-range forward passes.

As we often see, England international striker Kane drops deep, and this does cause issue when it comes to scoring.

Sky Sports pundit Merson believes that with Ward-Prowse in the Tottenham team, Kane would not have any reason to drop deep.

Merson said: “If I was Tottenham, I would be looking at Ward-Prowse because he can do what Kane can do. All of a sudden, Kane stays upfront.

“Ward-Prowse is the best English player in the country with a long-range pass. He hits 40-50 yards passes, he spreads the ball around the pitch.

“If I was Tottenham, I would be targeting him and then Kane stays upfront.”

Should Tottenham Hotspur sign James Ward-Prowse?

In our view, it would not be a bad idea for Tottenham to sign Ward-Prowse from Southampton in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham are a bigger and more ambitious club than the Saints, and a move to the North London club could appeal to the 27-year-old.

The England international midfielder has scored 12 goals from free kicks in the Premier League and can hold his own in the middle of the park.

It is unlikely that Ward-Prowse will cost a lot of money.

The midfielder earns £100,000 per week as salary at Southampton (Salary Sport).

That is certainly within Tottenham’s range.
