Jonathan Woodgate has said on BBC Sport that Leeds United are lacking a number 9 as a back-up to Patrick Bamford.
The former Leeds star made the observation during the ongoing Premier League game against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
The BBC Sport pundit believes that Leeds should have signed a striker in the January transfer window.
Leeds recently appointed Jesse Marsch as the head coach following the dismissal of Marcelo Bielsa.
The match against Leicester is the American’s first in charge of the West Yorkshire club.
Woodgate said: “In the transfer window Leeds had to recruit someone in that (striker’s) role. Patrick Bamford got 17 goals last season.
“They needed to do better to get another number nine in there. That cover is something Leeds really lack, in my view.”
Patrick Bamford is back for Leeds
Bamford returned to training only this week, with the Leeds striker having been on the sidelines since December 2021.
The striker has had injury problems this season and has been able to make only five starts in the Premier League.

The 28-year-old is on the bench against Leicester, and maybe he will come on at some stage.
Daniel James is a winger by trade, but the Wales international is leading the line for Leeds against the Foxes.
Interestingly, like Marsch, Bielsa also played the former Manchester United player upfront when Bamford was missing.
We do agree with Woodgate that Leeds should have signed a number nine, but the problem is that there are not too many quality strikers available in the middle of the season.
And if they are, then they cost a lot of money.
