Jeunes Footeux report that Crystal Palace and other English clubs are battling Rennes and Lille in the race to sign Aston Villa star Morgan Sanson. The midfielder is struggling for regular game time under Steven Gerrard.

Sanson, 27, joined Aston Villa for a fee of £16million (Guardian) in January 2021 – but has since managed just 17 Villa appearances. This season, he has only played seven times, starting only two matches since Gerrard arrived.

The likes of Douglas Luis, John McGinn and even Marvelous Nakamba are above Sanson in the pecking order – while the rise of Jacob Ramsey has pushed Sanson out of the matchday squad at times. It has been a struggle.

Now, JF report that Villa could decide to cash in come the end of the season and Crystal Palace are one of a number of English clubs taking a look at the uncapped French ace. Rennes and Lille want to take him back to Ligue 1.

Palace eye Villa star Sanson: Frenchman needs summer move

Sanson is really struggling for form and game time. He needs to find himself a new club, especially with Villa expected to sign a big-name midfielder in the summer – Brighton’s Yves Bissouma, perhaps.

The ex-Marseille man is a good player. He is a good enough signing for a Premier League club like Palace – his 47 goal involvements in 157 games for Marseille being proof. A return to Ligue 1 might restore his confidence.

Will Villa allow him to leave for a fee, smaller than the one they paid for him? Well, probably not much cheaper – given he has a contract until 2025.
