The third and final part of Kanye West’s new documentary Jeen-Yuhs just dropped on Netflix.
Directed by Coodie & Chike, it explores the rapper’s life and career using archive footage from the past 20 years.
Some notable moments in the 2022 documentary include the death of his mother, Kanye’s 2016 presidential campaign and the recording of his latest album Donda.
The latest episode has a surprise phone appearance from famous American record producer Rick Rubin. Let’s delve inside their almost decade-long friendship…
Rick Rubin appears in Kanye doc
In the second half of Jeen-Yuhs part three, Kanye sits down at a table and calls Rick Rubin.
Rick is one of the most renowned record producers of all time and has worked with some huge artists including Dixie Chicks, Adele, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and many more.
He was also the former president of Columbia Records and cofounded the record label Def Jam Recordings which is now owned by Universal Music Group.
At the start of the phone call, Rick says “I love you, I miss you, I’m so excited to see you,” before Kanye asks the producer to come to his Wyoming Ranch.
Rick then says that he “couldn’t be more excited” to see him and the 44-year-old responds by telling him why he shouldn’t use the word ‘excited’ as it “has a bit of negativity to it”.
The Praise God singer ends the phone call by saying “love you brother,” to which Rick replies “love you too,” showing that the pair clearly have a strong bond.
Their friendship dates back to Yeezus
Kanye and Rick’s friendship dates back to early 2013 when the rapper asked him to help complete his hit album Yeezus.
Just fifteen days before the release date, Kanye enlisted the producer’s help to finish the album as it was no where near complete.
When Ye first played the complilation to Rick, it was almost three and a half hours long and he was given the task of minimising it.
Rick worked as an executive producer on the album, re-recording whole songs and rewriting entire verses to finish it in time.
In a famous interview with radio DJ Zane Lowe in September 2013, Kanye said about Rubin: “He’s not a producer, he’s a reducer.”
The pair hung out together at Rick’s Shangri-La recording studio in Malibu and miraculously managed to finish the album in two weeks.
They’re still good friends
The pair formed an unbreakable bond and went on to work together again on Kanye’s 2016 album The Life of Pablo.
Rick was a co-producer on the album alongside Noah Goldstein. The pair worked on it together from development all the way through to recording and release.
Now, Kanye’s new documentary shows that the pair are still good friends in 2022. However, Rick didn’t work on the rapper’s most recent albums Donda and Donda 2.
Ye clearly still values his musical opinion though and after working so closely on Yeezus, the pair have a friendship that will last a lifetime.
