Graham Smyth has reported that Patrick Bamford was “very involved” in Leeds United training on Thursday morning ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s clash against Leicester City. Bamford has been injured since December.
Indeed, last season’s top scorer with 17 Premier League goals, Bamford has been sorely missed at Leeds this season. Now an England international, Bamford has managed just seven appearances in all competitions this term.
With 12 Premier League games to play, Leeds will be desperate to get Bamford back to fitness – especially given in the six Premier League games he has played, he has two goals and two assists. He trained on Thursday.
Having returned against Brentford in December from an injury, he immediately picked up a long-term issue that has kept him out for four months. But with manager Jesse Marsch in place, Bamford could feature.
That is, after Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Smyth took to Twitter to inform Leeds fans that Bamford had been training on Thursday morning and was “very involved”. Leeds travel to the King Power on Saturday.
Smyth on Bamford: Massive Leeds boost for Marsch before first game
It is enormous for Leeds, for Marsch and for the club’s chances of staying up. For the entire campaign, Leeds have lacked that focal point up top – that no.9 that can ruffle the feathers of opposing defenders and supporters.
Bamford is the kind of striker that can occupy two centre-backs, creating gaps elsewhere. He starts the press, he scores goals, he creates goals. Just as important as Kalvin Phillips, having Bamford back is huge for Marsch.
