Newcastle United reportedly face competition for the signing of Chelsea striker Timo Werner, with Borussia Dortmund now interested in the German international.

According to Sky Germany, the Bundesliga giants are considering a move for the Premier League forward, who is looking to exit Chelsea this summer after a second poor season with the west London club after joining from RB Leipzig in 2020.

The signing of Romelu Lukaku downgraded Werner to the bench, where the attacker has started just six Premier League games and scored six goals in all competitions, and the forward is now being eyed with a return to Germany with Dortmund, as well as Newcastle.

Sport Bild journalist Christian Falk reported in October that the Toon were chasing Werner, who could easily become of the club’s most expensive players with the forward earning a reported £272,000-a-week at Chelsea.

Indeed, a striker is likely to be a priority for Newcastle in the summer, and although Werner has failed to live up to expectations at Chelsea, a move north of London could refresh the striker and return him to his goalscoring form, unless Dortmund come in for the striker.

The German side are certain to sign a forward this summer with Erling Haaland destined to leave, and although Karim Adeyemi appears to be the name Dortmund have chosen to replace the 21-year-old superstar, Werner is also an extremely sensible choice for the Bundesliga giants.

Dortmund move could entice Werner over Newcastle

After flopping with Chelsea, Werner could be tempted to prove his worth in the Premier League with a move to Newcastle, however, Dortmund’s interest in the forward could prove to be more enticing for the former Leipzig star.

Indeed, Werner was a menace in the Bundesliga in his final season with Leipzig, and for a club like Dortmund, the German international could return to his brilliant best if he was to return to his home country after a spell with Chelsea.
