Stephen Warnock has lauded the transformation of Joelinton at Newcastle and claimed that he is ‘enjoyable to watch’, as he told the Football Show on Sky Sports.

The former left-back added that Joelinton did a ‘lovely little Maradona turn’ during Newcastle’s 2-0 win at Brentford on Saturday.

From a big-money struggling striker to a hard-hitting dominant midfielder, it has been some turnaround for the club’s new fan favourite.

At the start of the season, if the 25-year-old would have been sold, it would have been a relief for supporters, and probably the player himself, because of his struggles.

But, as soon as Eddie Howe entered the St James’ Park building, Joelinton has turned into a new man and Warnock is loving it.

“Superb and enjoyable to watch,” said Warnock. “Now, whether it was an injury that took him into midfield or Eddie Howe watching him in training.

“But he has been outstanding. You need to remember, for the position he took up, he is what 6ft3 ish? Now it would be difficult to play against someone of his ability.

“His ability to sense where the ball is going to drop. To have the quick feet and skill, lovely little Maradona turn, then sets up the player who is in a better position. And winning tackles. He’s on the front foot winning challenges. Putting his team in the ascendancy.

“He has been one of the most improved footballers after being written off for £40 million. People saying ‘what a waste of money and what is he going to ever bring?’ He has been outstanding for Newcastle this season.”

Newcastle are heading towards survival and there is no reason why they shouldn’t maintain their Premier League status now after a dreadful start.

The likes of Kieran Trippier and Calum Wilson will also be returning soon, so this Magpies squad will only get stronger.

When the individual awards are handed out after the final ball is kicked, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Joelinton walks away with a few prizes.

It could be argued that he has been Newcastle’s best player this season and, more than definitely, their most improved.
