Fabrizio Romano expects ‘Premier League clubs will return’ to Bologna trying to sign Aaron Hickey this summer after Aston Villa failed to secure a January transfer, via his CBS column.
Steven Gerrard explored a move for Hickey during the winter market as he sought to stamp his mark on Villa Park. But the defender’s Serie A side refused to sell their prized asset, who is a mainstay of manager Sinisa Mihajlovic’s plans at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium this term.
Hickey has flourished and displayed great attacking potential in Italy since leaving Scottish Premiership side Hearts for £1.5m in 2020. The 19-year-old has shown superb dual-footed skills and a creative flair, recording four goals and an assist in 36 games in all competitions.

Hickey has offered all of his goal involvements in 24 Serie A appearances so far this season. His latest was a maiden assist at Salernitana last Saturday, with Marko Arnautovic heading home his cross. But Mihajlovic’s side failed to hold on to the lead as they would draw 1-1.
Mihajlovic fielded Hickey at left-midfield against Salernitana, but has also used the Scotland U21 international at left-back. He has also featured in both defensive and midfield roles on the right-hand side. However, each goal involvement has come whilst playing on the left.
Romano expects PL interest in Bologna star Hickey after failed Aston Villa bid
Romano claims Premier League sides will now look to raid Bologna this summer, as Hickey continues to impress since Aston Villa failed to agree his transfer to Birmingham in January.

Italian publication Il Resto Del Carlino also cited Gerrard’s interest in the Glasgow-born gem this winter. They claimed Aston Villa offered Bologna €10m (£8.5m), plus 20% of any future transfer, for Hickey. But the Rossoblu feel he can fetch €12-15m (£10-12.5m) this summer.
Heightened Premier League interest at the end of the season will justify Bologna’s stance. It will also leave Gerrard and Aston Villa facing greater competition should they remain keen.
