According to Sport, Andreas Christensen has agreed to join Barcelona, despite interest from Tottenham and Newcastle.

What’s the story?

Well, it was FC Inter News who revealed that Newcastle are keen to sign the £83,000-a-week defender.

Elsewhere, Calciomercato claimed Tottenham are interested in pinching the Dane from their London rivals Chelsea.

Now, however, it seems the Premier League duo have lost out to Barcelona.

Sport believe Christensen has verbally agreed to team up with Xavi at the Camp Nou when his contract at Stamford Bridge expires in June.

Barcelona began their move for the 25-year-old last summer, and negotiations are said to have advanced in January.

Christensen is now close to signing a four-year contract with the Spanish giants, putting an end to Tottenham and Newcastle’s hopes.

Tottenham and Newcastle shouldn’t worry

It was always going to be hard for Spurs to convince Christensen to ditch Chelsea and join one of the Blues’ bitter rivals in Tottenham.

The Denmark international would’ve tarnished his relationship with the Blues if he did that, so Spurs shouldn’t be too upset about missing out on him.

In Newcastle’s case, it also would’ve been tough to convince Christensen to join, as he would be giving up Champions League football.

The Chelsea centre-back was an ambitious target for both Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe, so hopefully, they didn’t have their hopes up about signing him.

In our view, it’s good for Spurs and the Magpies to hear this news now, so they can focus on other targets with plenty of time until the summer window.
