Owen Hargreaves has told BT Sport’s Europa League highlights show that if he was one of the Premier League’s top four clubs – he would be trying to sign Jude Bellingham. Liverpool are reportedly on pole position to get him.
Bellingham, 18, took his goal involvements to 18 in 33 appearances for Dortmund this season – scoring and creating another despite being knocked out of the Europa League to Scottish side Rangers at Ibrox on Thursday.
Having scored in the first leg, a 4-2 defeat to Rangers. Last night, he scored and created another for Dortmund in a 2-2 draw at Ibrox – one of the most-historic nights in Scottish football. Of course, Liverpool are interested.
The Mirror claim Liverpool are on pole position to sign the midfielder in the summer for a fee of £90million. Speaking after his Ibrox outing, Hargreaves said any top-four side should get the cheque book out and sign him.
“This kid is so special,” Hargreaves said, on BT Sport. “He is probably one of my favourite players in all of Europe to watch. 18 years old, it’s not normal how consistent he is. He’s a leader.
“In terms of goals and assists, he offers so much. If I was any of the top four teams in the Premier League, I would be getting the cheque book out and signing a cheque. He is too good to pass up. He is the real deal.”
Hargreaves on Bellingham: England star massively improves Liverpool
Liverpool have numerous, excellent midfield options. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones are all good players that are capable of the odd 8/10 performance. But Bellingham is the future.
At 18, he is already out-performing his Dortmund teammates – including Marco Reus, Julian Brandt and Donyell Malen. Erling Haaland was missing on Thursday night. £90million, of course, is hugely expensive.
But it is an investment, as well as an immediate improvement. If Liverpool sign Bellingham for nine years from the summer, lasting at Anfield until he is 27, that is just £10million a year. An absolute no brainer.
