Liverpool loanee Sepp Van den Berg has indicated that he could stay at Preston North End if Ryan Lowe’s side secure promotion to the Premier League this season, speaking to Lancs Live.

With Preston sitting 12th in the table, you’d be forgiven for taking Van den Berg’s comments with a pinch of salt. But this is the Championship we’re talking about.

You’re only ever a decent week or two away from the promised land in this most topsy-turvy division and, as things stand, there are only six points separating Preston in 12th from Middlesbrough in sixth.

Dutch U21 international Van den Berg is one of the first names on the Lilywhite’s team-sheet and started his 32nd game of the season when Nottingham Forest arrived at Deepdale on Tuesday night.

The 20-year-old was typically composed on the right-hand side of Ryan Lowe’s back three, keeping the in-form Keinan Davis and Brennan Johnson quiet during a 0-0 draw which flatters the visitors more than it does the hosts.

“I have felt all of the love I’ve gotten ever since I came here,” says Van den Berg, who joined Liverpool from Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle in 2019.

“I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me.”

Does Sepp Van den Berg have a future at Liverpool?

When pressed on his Preston future, Van den Berg admitted that he’ll probably be bidding farewell to life at Deepdale when the season comes to an end.

But there’s always one team who leave it late before steaming into the play-off picture. Could Preston be the one this year, arriving fashionably late to the promotion party?

“You never know,” Van den Berg adds. “But I reckon after this season that it unfortunately has to come to an end.

“But I have really enjoyed my time here. There are still a few months to go, so I will just keep enjoying it while I am here. If we get to the Premier League (for) next year, I might as well stay here!

“You never know. I just live in the moment and enjoy every game. We’ll see.

“Liverpool is a big club. I have been talking with the loan manager and it’s been all positive as well, which is good for me. I am really happy and grateful that I got the opportunity here.”
