Tottenham are reportedly battling the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City in the race to sign Inter Milan hotshot Lautaro Martinez. A player, that Cristian Romero named as one of his toughest opponents while at Atalanta.

Martinez, 24, has been on fire. Having a hand in 30 goals last season during 47 games – he even scored against Atalanta during a 1-1 draw back in November 2020, a match in which Romero played. Now, Spurs are keen.

Having won the Copa America last summer and added another 12 goals this time around, Inter want a premium fee – with SPORT reporting Inter want £58.5million. TMW report Tottenham are working on a deal for Martinez.

Arsenal and Manchester City have also been linked with the Argentina international seemingly edging towards England. In 2020, Romero raved about Martinez – saying he was one of the toughest he has come up against.

Quoted by Sempre Inter, Romero responded when asked to name his toughest opponents in 2020: “Inter’s Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku, together with Ajax’s Dusan Tadic are certainly very strong.”

Romero on Martinez: Argentine a stunning Tottenham signing

Spurs do have options. Dejan Kulusevski was superb on the right of a front three alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min on Saturday against Manchester City. Lucas Moura has otherwise been first choice for Spurs.

Steven Bergwijn has even shown signs of resurgence, most notably his brace against Leicester City to win 3-2. Bryan Gil remains on the books, shining on loan at Valencia. But Martinez eclipses all of them.

While all the aforementioned players are good, exceptional players – Martinez is a proper superstar. So much so, that the required fee of less than £60million is a bargain. Spurs have got to sign him, if they can.
