Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has praised Joao Felix, but warns the Newcastle United transfer-linked star that he spends too much time on the ground, via quotes by AS.
The Colchoneros chief believes various reasons sees the Portuguese hit the deck during his side’s fixtures. One of the causes Cerezo senses is that Felix tries too hard to prove himself and ultimately draws unnecessary contact. But the issue is not down solely to the maestro.
Felix is among La Liga’s most fouled players, having been brought down 44 times so far this season, per SofaScore. Only ten Spanish top-flight players have drawn more fouls this term, with Celta Vigo’s Javi Galan (58) atop the list. No Atleti star currently features above Felix.

Diego Simeone has not relied on Felix the most so far this season, either, with the 22-year-old featuring 17 times. Eleven Atletico players have appeared more often than the £113m playmaker, who has provided three goals and three assists over his outings, starting seven.
Atletico president warns Newcastle-linked Joao Felix over time on the ground
Injuries have impacted Felix’s availability for Simeone so far this season, having undergone ankle surgery in the summer for one. Limited output in front of goal also put his future at the Wanda Metropolitano in doubt last month. Even though he is under contract to 2026.
Reports by AS claimed a transfer from Atletico Madrid to Newcastle tempted Felix, as well. The Magpies hit the market hard this winter following their £305m Saudi-backed takeover.

But the Toon could not, or chose not to, seal the 20-cap international’s services in January. Now, Cerezo hopes Felix can stay on his feet to show the world the player he is and can be.
“Joao is a magnificent footballer,” Cerezo declared. “One of the best in the league and in Europe and he tries to prove it. But for one reason or another, he is always on the ground.”
