Alan Shearer labelled Diego Llorente’s defending towards Harry Maguire as ‘bizarre’ during Leeds United’s 4-2 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday, as he told PL Productions (20/02/22 at 2:55 pm).
Manchester United opened the scoring in front of a hostile Elland Road crowd, with Llorente getting well-beaten to the ball by Maguire from a beautifully whipped in corner from Luke Shaw.
Shearer just couldn’t understand why the Leeds centre-back was looking at Maguire and ‘not once’ did he look at the incoming corner.
That was just the first header of the afternoon because, on the stroke of half-time, Bruno Fernandes then got in on the act.
But when Shearer was analysing Llorente’s defending, he was pretty forthright in what he had to say.
“Llorente has just got all eyes on Maguire rather than the ball,” said Shearer. “It’s just terrible defending.
“If he has a look at the ball, then he would be able to get to the ball before Maguire.
“But not once does he look to see where the ball is, which is bizarre when you are meant to be marking and defending for a corner.”

At the half-time break, Llorente was hooked off by Marcelo Bielsa and it worked a treat because Leeds produced a stunning fightback.
Rodrigo scored an unusual goal after his cross ended up being a shot and, less than a minute later, substitute Raphinha levelled the scores.
But a throwback to the old days, this old rivalry just kept on producing with Fred scoring Man United’s third and he was then joined by Anthony Elanga who wrapped it up at the end.
Once again, Leeds United’s defensive problems were there for all to see as they have conceded 3+ goals once again.
