Owen Hargreaves has told BT Sport’s Europa League highlights show that Rangers star Ryan Kent reminded him of a prime Franck Ribery on Wednesday night. The Ibrox star got an assist, in the win over Dortmund.
Kent, 25, has been a creative genius this season – laying on his `12th assist in his 26th appearance of 21-22 in the WestFalenStadion. His run saw him jink past three Dortmund players – before laying off midfielder John Lundstram.
Rangers produced a stunning display that saw them earn one of their most-memorable nights in European history – beating Dortmund 4-2. Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier also scored, as well as an own goal.
Jude Bellingham and Raphael Guerreiro also netted but it was Rangers that now boast a two-goal lead going into the second leg. Hargreaves was full of praise for Kent, saying the ex-Liverpool man reminded him of Ribery.
“I love watching Ryan Kent, technically he’s absolutely brilliant. It looked like Franck Ribery when he used to do it for Bayern. Absolutely exceptional with the ball at his feet. Running at players is his greatest attribute.
“He shocked everyone there. Dortmund won’t have known much about him, but in the changing room, they’ll be asking who he is. Premier League clubs will be looking at him. He caused so many issues for Dortmund.”
Hargreaves on Kent: Rangers star one of many kings in Germany
Kent was absolutely superb. While there were times of frustration, he made things happen and put a shaky Dortmund defence. His assist is a thing of genius, rolling the ball – mixing trickery with end product.
But he was not the only one to sparkle in front of a reduced Dortmund crowd. Ryan Jack was stunning, even after so long out. He and Lundstram earned praise from manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst after the match.
Borna Barisic was solid on the left, under-pressure Allan McGregor was superb, Calvin Bassey brilliant alongside Connor Goldson. Every Rangers player was fantastic. A night to remember for Rangers fans.
