Newcastle scouts are reportedly watching Rennes wonderkid Jeremy Doku ahead of a potential £22million move this summer. A player, that surprised Kylian Mbappe at Euro 2020 – thanks to the Belgian’s incredible speed.
Doku, 19, has endured a tricky season at Rennes – picking up hamstring and knee injuries in the first half of the campaign. It has limited the 10-time Belgium international to just 12 appearances during the 2021-22 season.
The Chronicle claim that Newcastle are interested in signing ex-Anderlecht star Doku – and scouts have been observing the winger from afar. His performances at Euro 2020 certainly put Doku on the European stage.
So much so, that he earned praise from PSG attacker Mbappe. Speaking at Euro 2020, the France superstar said he was shocked at just how quick Doku was – claiming he had never seen anything like it from the Belgian.
“I was speaking about a player who impressed me because of his speed, Doku,” Mbappe said – as per GFFN. “In 5 years as a professional, I have never seen someone from a standing start demonstrate so much power.”
Mbappe on Doku: Why Newcastle could strike their best deal so far
Doku is a player with enormous potential. Constant links with Liverpool as a long-term replacement for Sadio Mane, or Mo Salah, shows how highly he is rated. At £22million, he is an utter bargain, if Rennes are willing to sell.
His pace is electrifying. His potential unwavering. But a move for Doku could be Newcastle’s best yet – even better than Trippier – because it shows the Toon are planning for the future. He could be the face of the new era.
Of the five signings Newcastle made, only one was a real addition for the future in Bruno Guimaraes. Doku would be a real sign of intent from the club’s new hierarchy. The Belgian could be a stunning Toon signing.
