Newcastle United’s chase of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez continues – and it seems they’re willing to pay big money for the Uruguayan.
Portuguese newspaper Record claim that Newcastle are prepared to keep going higher and higher in their attempts to land Nunez.
Agent Edgardo Lasalvia is allegedly keen for the striker to make a big move this summer despite penning a five-year deal in 2020.
Nunez is seemingly ready and waiting for his next big step, and Newcastle want to make sure they win the race.
The problem for Newcastle is that Correio da Manha also have an update on Nunez, and they claim Benfica are hiking up their asking price.
Having previously been seeking a fee of around €60million (£50million), Benfica are now prepared to hike that up to around €80million (£67million).
Benfica seemingly know that Newcastle are prepared to pay whatever it takes to get Nunez to Tyneside, and are putting the price up as a result.
West Ham thought they had agreed a January deadline day deal to sign Nunez, but the move didn’t materialise.
That means Newcastle can still swoop in at the end of the season, but Benfica are looking to take advantage with a huge asking price.
Nunez, 22, has been outstanding this season, smashing 23 goals and two assists in 27 games across all competitions.

Playing up front or out wide, Nunez has been a complete nuisance with pace, strength and a superb work rate.
Newcastle are seemingly convinced that Nunez can be a success in the Premier League, following in the footsteps of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.
The price tag has to be a concern even if PIF have bags of money to play with, as we have seen what a huge price tag can do to a player’s confidence; just look at Joelinton as a striker!
Newcastle may well love Nunez, but they need to be willing to walk away if Benfica keep hiking that price tag up over the coming months.
