Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Micah Richards has been sharing his bemusement over Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez’s recent form.

The two South Americans haven’t been great as of late. They’ve struggled to get to grips with Antonio Conte’s system and they’ve played a part in Spurs’ leaky defence.

Richards says he’s been very confused by the pair’s performances as he believes that they are both actually good players.

What’s been said?

Richards was critical of the defensive pairing.

“The senior players are not playing well. Romero and Sanchez, I’m confused, these are good players, or at least they were good players, I don’t understand. You can’t say they’re top players because the Premier League is a difficult league, but they were good players. He’s (Sanchez) struggling for confidence, he doesn’t look like he knows what he’s doing there, the system, they’re playing the three at the back, I don’t know if he’s good enough or if he wants to play in that position,” Richards said.

Not enough control

Richards points out Sanchez and Romero as two problem players here, but these issues are much more deep-rooted than this.

Yes, the two South Americans could be playing better, but the real problem is that Spurs aren’t working as a unit.

At the weekend, Wolves were able to play through the lines far too easily, and when you’re playing a back three, that simply can’t be allowed to happen as any organised attack will be able to stretch the centre-backs with ease.

Factor in a lack of tracking back from midfield and two wing-backs who were continuously caught in possession, and you can see why Sanchez and Romero are being made to look like poor footballers.

As Richards says, these are good players, but they’re playing in a poor side at the moment.
