Jermaine Jenas has told Match of the Day 2 on Sunday evening that Davinson Sanchez was “shocking” during a 2-0 defeat to Wolves. Tottenham have suffered a huge blow in their pursuit of the top four in the last week.
Leading 2-1 against Southampton on Wednesday after 70 minutes, Spurs lost 3-2. The hangover remained on Sunday, as Spurs suffered an early defensive collapse against an in-form Wolves side under Bruno Lage.
Hugo Lloris was at fault for both goals, the first parrying an effort that should have been caught – Raul Jimenez profiting, finished superbly. Leander Dendoncker got the second, after a poor Lloris pass to Ben Davies.
Tottenham were all over the place at the back and Colombia international Sanchez was poor. Even in the second 45, he was dispossessed and Wolves almost got a third. Jenas took aim at the ex-Ajax man on MOTD2.
“Sanchez was shocking. He really was. Things like, body language are really important defensively. You need leaders, you need people talking. They’ve got no idea. The panic they have, Sanchez wasn’t listening to Lloris.”
Jenas on Sanchez: Tottenham desperately miss Dier
A player that was being linked with the exit door towards the end of Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham spell. But now, Dier is a lynchpin at the back, one of the club’s only real visible leaders.
Without him, Cristian Romero has played in the middle and Sanchez on the right. But when Dier returns, Sanchez will drop out and Copa America winner Romero will return to the middle. Until then, Spurs will struggle.
Sanchez’s performance will surely convince Antonio Conte to consider including Joe Rodon or Japhet Tanganga in Tottenham’s next outing – a trip to Manchester City, if Dier is not fit.
