SC Freiburg CEO Jochen Saier has said star defender and rumoured Newcastle United target Nico Schlotterbeck could leave this summer after interest in the January window.

Speaking to Sky Germany, the Bundesliga official revealed some major news on the future of the German international with the Freiburg chief saying Schlotterbeck could be off in the upcoming summer window.

The 22-year-old has been a breakout star in Germany this season, and according to Sport1, Newcastle are interested in Schlotterbeck, who could be available in the summer for just €20m (£16m).

The Toon are likely to go big in the off-season on new players just like they did in January, with defence a position Eddie Howe is eager to improve on given the club’s horrific record in the Premier League this campaign.

And one player who could now be signed is Schlotterbeck, with the Freiburg CEO sending out an important transfer message over the future of the German international, who could be set for a Newcastle move.

Saier said when asked about Schlotterbeck’s future at Freiburg: “There were big clubs interested. It was clear to us that we wouldn’t let him go in the winter. In the summer, there’s a chance.”

With the Freiburg CEO saying there’s a chance Schlotterbeck could leave this summer, Newcastle must be all over this transfer given the potential of the young German centre-back.

Schlotterbeck has been impressive in the Bundesliga this season, and a move to the Premier League to an ambitious club like Newcastle could be a wise career decision for the defensive prospect, even if Freiburg qualify for Europe come the end of the campaign.
