Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon is wanted back at Real Madrid – and a final decision on a move is expected by the end of the month.

That’s according to The Sunday Mirror (13/02, p73) who claim that Real are plotting to activate their buy-back clause on Reguilon.

Real know that long-serving left back Marcelo is poised to leave Real Madrid when his contract expire this summer.

They therefore need to find another left back to offer competition for first choice Ferland Mendy, with Reguilon the top choice.

When Real sold Reguilon to Tottenham for £27million in 2020, they included a buy-back clause that expires on the 30th of May this year.

The buy-back deal would cost around £34million, meaning Tottenham would make a small profit on the Spaniard.

Real’s technical staff are believed to be set on Reguilon having compiled positive scouting reports about his development at Tottenham.

Rayo Vallecano talent Fran Garcia – who, like Reguilon, came through the Real ranks – is also on their radar.

Reguilon is the top choice though, even if he would cost considerably more to buy than Garcia, who they only let go last summer.

Reguilon, 25, has picked up one goal and three assists this season and has been playing prominently as a left wing back under Antonio Conte.

Left on the bench against Wolverhampton Wanderers today, Reguilon hasn’t been perfect at Tottenham but wouldn’t be all that easy to replace.

Ryan Sessegnon has yet to show that he can be a starting left wing back in the Premier League and Tottenham are short of other options.

With a decision expected by the end of the February, Tottenham would at least have bags of time to identify replacements for Reguilon.

Tottenham are at Real’s mercy here. The buy-back clause means Tottenham can’t negotiate or turn down an offer, so there will be mounting fears that the Spaniard will be leaving this summer.
