With Everton being dragged into a Premier League basement battle, we’ve taken a look at whether or not the Toffees have ever been relegated before.

It’s been a tumultuous season at Goodison Park.

When Carlo Ancelotti took the opportunity to return to Real Madrid in early June, there was a frantic search to appoint a replacement before the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign.

The board took a surprise gamble on former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez and it’s fair to say that it didn’t pay off.

Benitez only lasted until mid-January and after Duncan Ferguson briefly stepped up to the role of caretaker manager once again, Frank Lampard took the reins.

His tenure began with an emphatic 4-1 win over Brentford in the FA Cup but a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle in the Premier League a few days later and a point for Norwich City against Crystal Palace the following night, left the Toffees hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone.

While they still have at least one game in hand on many of the teams around them, it’s a precarious situation.

But is this unchartered territory for Everton?

Have Everton ever been relegated?

Everton are veritable veterans of the English top tier.

The have been relegated before, twice, but never in the Premier League era (1992/93 to present).

The first time they went down to the old Second Division was at the end of the 1929/30 season [The Guardian].

They bounced back at the first opportunity, though, and then proceeded to win the top-flight title the following season, before clinching the FA Cup in 1933.

The Toffees were relegated again at the end of the 1950/51 season and this time took a little longer to return.

Impressively, though, they have held onto top-tier status ever since securing promotion back at the end of the 1953/54 campaign.

Only Arsenal have had a longer continuous run in the top league [Goal].

Such a record only increases the pressure on Lampard to turn things around over the coming weeks and months.
