Fabrizio Romano told his Here We Go podcast that talks over a new deal for Harry Kane will not take place in February or March. However, the player has changed his tune – and a top-four spot remains key to his Spurs future.

Kane, 28, has been in stunning form under Antonio Conte. He is believed to be delighted with the arrival of the Italian gaffer, and the way the ex-Chelsea boss has changed the mindset at the North London club.

Spurs remain in the race for a place in the top four, boasting games in hand over West Ham, Arsenal and Manchester United. Win those, and they will sit in fourth. Kane himself, has rediscovered his form after last summer.

Of course, Kane made it clear he was keen on a move. But now, he seems happy again – and has stats of 15 goals in 31 appearances. The England skipper has scored four in his last six Premier League matches.

That, as well as a brace last time out against Brighton in a 3-1 FA Cup fourth round. Romano said Spurs fans have been asking if he will sign a new deal. He responded, saying the situation has changed from last summer.

“Many Tottenham fans are asking about a new contract for Harry Kane. From what I’m told, it is not something that will be discussed in February or March,” Romano told his Here We Go podcast, released on Tuesday.

“It is going to take time, for Kane to sign a new deal at Tottenham. But the situation is completely different. They need to win something or get top four, it is key in keeping Harry Kane at the club.”

Romano on Kane: Conte deserves credit if Tottenham keep him

Kane has outgrown Tottenham over the last few seasons. No-one can really argue with that and while no player is bigger than the club – the player himself probably deserves to go on and fight for the Premier League title.

Fast forward to now, from last summer, and not many would have seen Kane putting pen to paper on a new Spurs deal. But the arrival of Conte has changed everything. Spurs look like a top-four side, and Kane could stay.
