Well, Luis Diaz certainly didn’t take long to make an impression on his Liverpool debut this afternoon.
Liverpool eased beyond Cardiff City at Anfield to move into the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Prior to kickoff, the big story was Jurgen Klopp including Diaz in his matchday squad today.
The Colombia international sealed a £49 million transfer to Merseyside from Porto shortly before the end of the January transfer window.
The German manager introduced Diaz on before the hour mark and 10 minutes later, he bagged his first assist as a Liverpool player.
The 25-year-old dispossessed a City player and demonstrated brilliant footwork to keep the ball in play, before squaring for Takumi Minamino to make it 2-0.
Here’s what Darren Ambrose said of the assist live on Sky Sports News: “I was saying we’ve not seen much of Luis Diaz. He got the assist here. It’s fantastic feet from Luis Diaz right on the line and he’s cut it back and Minamino has arrived right on time to slot it past Dylan Phillips. You have to say it’s deserved.”
Harvey Elliott, who came on at the same time as Diaz, made it 3-0 shortly after that.
This is the 18-year-old’s first appearance since suffering a horrible ankle injury away at Leeds United back in September.
So for the youngster to score on his return is also massively encouraging.
But Diaz making his Liverpool debut – and impressing – was the major story of this afternoon and hopefully for the Reds, it’s a sign of things to come.
