Newcastle United have suffered a blow in their pursuit to sign Brazilian defender Gleison Bremer, who has signed a new contract with Torino.
The Serie A side announced on their official website that the centre-back had penned a new deal with the Turin-based club. Bremer’s new contract will now see the defender stay in Italy until 2024 at the latest.
According to Corriere Granata, Newcastle made a €30m (£25m) to sign Bremer earlier in the January transfer window. However, the offer for the defensive unit was rejected by Torino, the South American now committing his future to the club.
Whilst Newcastle were able to sign a centre-back in the market in Dan Burn from Brighton and Hove Albion, Bremer could have been a solid option for Eddie Howe’s side and could have joined the new Brazilian contingent of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.
However, Torino have managed to secure Bremer’s services for the next few seasons with a new contract, leaving Newcastle in the dust and looking for alternative targets ahead of the summer transfer window.
Hailed as ‘incredible’ by Fabrizio Romano, the 24-year-old has been one of Serie A’s most underrated centre-backs in recent years. And for Newcastle, Bremer signing a new contract is a big blow to the club’s transfer plans.
Bremer contract means Newcastle will have to pay more in the summer
With a contract extension until 2024, it isn’t impossible to rule out Newcastle going back in for Bremer this summer. However, the new deal will give Torino a lot more leverage in negotiations, which could be a blow for the Toon.
Indeed, Bremer has shown that he has the quality to compete at the highest level and has real potential to become a better defender than he already is. However, Torino are now in a position to demand a high fee for the Brazilian, which will work against Newcastle and their interest in the centre-back.
