Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur are planning a late bid for Djed Spence and beat Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to his signature, according to The Mirror.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal eye Djed Spence

The Mirror have reported that Tottenham are considering making an offer on January transfer deadline day for Spence, who is on loan at Nottingham Forest from Middlesbrough at the moment.

Spurs head coach Antonio Conte wanted to sign Adama Traore before the winger moved to Barcelona from Wolverhampton Wanderers this month.

Conte wanted the Spain international winger to play as a right wing-back.

Tottenham have now reportedly identified Spence as a player who could operate at right wing-back.

The 21-year-old is able to play as a right-back or as a left-back.

The Mirror have reported that Arsenal, Southampton and AS Roma all are interested in Spence, who is valued at £10 million.

One for the future

In our view, Spence would be a good signing for Tottenham, not just for now, but in the long run as well.

After all, the Middlesbrough-owned defender is still only 21.

Since the youngster has already played for Middlesbrough and Forest this season, he is not eligible to turn out for another club.

So, if Tottenham do sign the 21-year-old now, then they will either have to let him carry on playing on loan for Forest or draft him into their Under-23 side.

We think that keeping Spence on loan at Forest would be a good idea for Tottenham, if indeed they sign him today.

Spence, who has played as a right-winger and further upfront as well this season, has scored one goal and provided one assist in 22 Championship matches this campaign.
